Collecting Egypt: Asking Questions

I will be working through some ethical issues with students tomorrow. Our themes will include:

• The scale of the market
• The removal of material from the Saqqara stora (Ka-Nefer-Nefer in St Louis Art Museum; Middle Kingdom Alabaster Duck)
• Thefts from recorded archaeological sites (The eye of Amenhotep III; The tomb of Tetaki; The tomb of Mutirdis; The Naos fragment of Amenemhat I; The tomb of Imep-Hor)
• Thefts from unrecorded archaeological sites (The head of Amenhotep III)
• Recently surfaced antiquities (The Miami coffin)
• Antiquities from other museums (The "Barry Stern" collection)
• (Possible) modern creations (The Amarna Princess; The Berlin Hatshepsut)
• Zahi Hawass and claims on older acquisitions (The Rosetta Stone; Nefertiti in Berlin)

The lecture will hopefully be interactive with questions directed through Twitter.
